Wind and Hail Deductible Help: Estimate Your Out-of-Pocket Cost

Work through percentage and flat wind/hail deductibles with examples, plus when not to file a claim because damage is below your deductible.

Updated March 5, 2026

This guide helps you estimate wind and hail out-of-pocket costs without a separate calculator app—using your declarations page and a few multiplication steps.

Example: 2% wind/hail on $350,000 dwelling

350,000 × 0.02 = $7,000. The insurer applies this to covered wind/hail loss before payment. If repairs are $6,500, you may receive $0 even though damage is real.

Example: $2,500 flat wind/hail deductible

Covered loss minus $2,500. Easier to predict, but verify the endorsement actually uses a flat amount for hail—not only for wind.

When damage is near your deductible

  • Get two contractor estimates before filing.
  • Ask if cosmetic-only classification would apply.
  • Consider paying out of pocket to protect claims history if payment would be minimal.

Frequently asked questions

Is wind/hail deductible the same as hurricane deductible?
Not always. Some policies stack different triggers. Read each endorsement separately.
Does deductible apply to personal property too?
Usually property deductibles apply per policy terms. Roof damage is often dwelling coverage; confirm in your form.
